ST. ANNA'S RESIDENCE
1823 Prytania Street
New Orleans, Louisiana 70130-5219
St. Anna's Residence
, located in the Garden District of New Orleans, is a non-profit, non-denominational nursing home founded in 1850 - a home in the finest sense of the word, where tradition is moving into the future with love and care.History
There is perhaps one word in the English language that can describe St. Anna's. That
word is caring. From the very beginning, in 1850, when a group of concerned ladies formed
an organization called "The Society for the Relief of Destitute Females and Their
Helpless Children," to the present, St. Anna's has been a refuge - a sanctuary of
caring. The need for that original organization came in the tragic aftermath of
devastating yellow fever epidemics that left many women widowed and many children
orphaned.
Funds were forthcoming from generous donors such as Jenny Lind, Judah Touro, and most
especially Dr. William N. Mercer. Dr. Mercer's wife and two small children died, leaving
him with a small, fragile daughter named Anna. All efforts to improve Anna's health
failed, and she died at the age of 19. In memory of his daughter, Dr. Mercer donated
$25,000 to the organization - funds to be used to erect a building to carry on the
ever-increasing relief work of the society. In appreciation of his generosity, the Board
of Directors changed the name of the society to "St. Anna's Asylum for the Relief of
Destitute Females and Their Helpless Children of All Religious Denominations. Recently,
the name was changed to its present form, St. Anna's Residence, a home to men and women of
all faiths.
The same spirit of caring which guided the footsteps of those early founders continues
today. It is caring which permeates every aspect of life at St. Anna's. The historic
building itself, inside and out, reflects the pride and contentment of its residents.
Care
In a secure, comfortable environment at St. Annas, each resident is provided with an air-conditioned room with individual thermostat. While many rooms have private baths, all have in-room wash basins and mirrors. Residents may bring their own furniture, if they wish, or use ours. Families may wish to redecorate their resident's room with carpet, bedspread, or draperies.
Although St. Anna's is a licensed intermediate care facility, not a skilled nursing facility, around the clock nursing care is provided, supervised by qualified nurses under the direction of a Staff Physician. The excellent ratio of caregivers to residents far exceeds nationally recognized standards. We pride ourselves on our warm, nurturing environment and staff.
Services include all meals, housekeeping and laundry. At all times residents can be assisted as necessary with grooming, dressing and bathing, medications, feeding, and other daily chores.
Activities
A full-time activity director and assistant coordinate craft workshops, movies, musical entertainment, guest speakers, card games, films and special plans for holiday seasons in the several activity rooms. All activities are tailored to residents' interests and abilities.
Respite Care
Respite Care is temporary residence offered to those who are normally cared for by relatives or friends in their own homes. If the caregiver becomes ill, is called away, or just needs some "down time," St. Anna's will take care of the patient in a safe, warm, nurturing environment. Respite rooms are located near the nursing station and those temporary residents are afforded the same care as our regular residents. Minimum stay, 4 days per calendar year.
