Life Activities
ProgramA key element of care in The Meadow Wing is the Life Activities Program which incorporates each residents history, preferences and abilities into an individualized care plan. This supportive and dignified approach fosters self-esteem by drawing upon two powerful components: the emotional response evoked by remembering ones life events and past personal experiences, and a success-oriented program implementing daily living skills.
Every day is fully scheduled in The Meadow Wing, from the early morning into the evening hours, with particular emphasis at sundown when some residents require extra care. In order to maintain residents physical and mental skills, a variety of structured programs are implemented daily, including arts and crafts, table games, word and number games, and stretching exercises. Our program works by engaging both mind and body in a calming atmosphere.
Every aspect of The Meadow Wing at Palo Alto Commons is designed to create a safe and comfortable atmosphere. The charming accommodations are spacious and cheerful, many with views of lovely gardens and outdoor pathways.
Here we feature Friendship Living; shared living accommodations where residents share the simple joys of lifes daily routine. Private apartment residences are available as well.
Display of personal memorabilia and photos is encouraged, as is decorating private space with favorite furnishings and treasures. Accented with distinctive colors and visual cues to reassure residents, the activities area and dining rooms are lovely spaces for meaningful gatherings and programs. The unobtrusive security system ensures a restraint-free, safe environment.
In recognition that the resident is not the only person affected by Alzheimers Disease and dementia, an integral part of our program involves helping family members with their own challenges. Family support is extended by our staff through individual and group counseling. In addition, the staff of The Meadow Wing serves as a resource to families in order to strengthen care received by the residents. Each family is invited to participate in the development of a care plan and to continue as an important part of the life of their loved one.
At the heart of daily
life at The Meadow Wing is our specially trained staff. Each and every member goes through
a rigorous instruction program to understand Alzheimers Disease and dementia. More
important, each is tutored to interact with residents in a manner that helps alleviate
agitation, anger and anxiety. Through formal classroom instruction and direct interaction
with residents, our staff learn how to provide care and stimulation with compassion and a
smile. The focus of our instructional training is the application of a personalized,
supportive and non-judgmental response to residents behaviors, using skill and
warmth in place of medication and restraint. The Meadow Wing is staffed 24 hours each day
with a ratio of staff to residents that far exceeds federal and state regulatory
standards.
